This
symposium will explore new directions in forest genetics research in population
dynamics and evolution, tree breeding, and conservation, with an emphasis on biology
at the population and species levels of organization. An objective of the symposium
will be to develop a research agenda that builds on the diverse areas of work
that Dr. Namkoong has developed, and that he hopes would lead to coherent understanding
of forestry. He considers breeding to be a guided form of evolution, which requires
understanding of evolutionary processes, but is neither constrained to mimicking
natural phenomenon nor destroying them in the process of development. By discussing
and integrating evolutionary models of unstable systems, joint functions of genotype
and environment effects, multiple population structures and breeding, we hope
to develop better designs for the conservation and utilization of forest genetic
resources.
