Above are Gary Paull (left) and my brother Kerry. I did a lot of hikes with Gary, and Kerry too. This looking north, towards Mount Baker in the background above that noticeable dip in the snow.
Gary Paull is now wilderness and
trails coordinator for the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington State. For example, www.pcta.org/general/SeattlePI102903.asp.

I stepped back to the right to take a picture. A big CRACK. And a jump!! The dip is gone, and Kerry surveying where I could have gone. It’s a 2000 foot cliff. Great avalanche set. I jumped and Gary and Kerry grabbed my arms. No MLTR or Genomic projects if I wasn’t facing west.
I can prevent similar disasters if you come to UBC.
